“The kidnapping of students and innocents for money should stop” – America

The United States expressed its strong opposition to the harassment of students and innocent citizens in Ethiopia and pointed out that the rule of law is deteriorating in the country. Ervin Masinga, the American ambassador to Ethiopia, said, “Recent incidents in the Oromia and #Amhara regions against innocent citizens are a clear indication that criminals are being raped and the rule of law is being undermined in connection with long-term conflicts.”

The ambassador stressed the need to stop the harassment of students and innocent people for financial gain as stated on the embassy’s X page. Last week, more than 100 university students came to share their experiences of such events. More than 100 university students who were traveling from Amhara region to Addis Ababa were arrested by armed forces in Oromia region.

The victims are mainly students of #Debarq University and the incident took place in Gerbe Guracha town of North Showa Zone of Oromia. Reporting such violations is critical to ensuring accountability and justice.
