4 coordinators and 97 people were arrested  in Addis Ababa

Next Sunday, November 30/2023. When it was said that four of the politicians who were coordinating the peaceful demonstration to be held in Addis Ababa city were arrested by the police, the government announced that 97 people were arrested in connection with this.

Four of the coordinators of the rally on Thursday, November 27/2023. Assistant Professor Znabu Abera, chairman of the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP), one of the coordinators of the demonstration, told the BBC that those arrested were suspected of “preventing” the planned peaceful demonstration.

In the evening after the arrest of the coordinators, a statement issued by the Security and Safety Joint Task Force stated that “groups that were operating on Wednesday to create chaos and disorder in Addis Ababa under the guise of a peaceful demonstration have foiled their plot”, thus announcing the arrest of 97 suspects. However, there is nothing about the presence of the four organizers of the rally among the people arrested by the security forces.

Yeshiwas Asefa and assistant professor Znabu confirmed to the BBC that among the organizers arrested on Thursday morning were the First Vice Chairman of the EPPA, Pastor Old Abraham Heman, and former Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice (EZEMA) member, Nathaniel Mekonen.

In addition, the leaders of the Resurrection Seventy Party, which held its founding general assembly recently, Mr. Gidena Madhen and Mr. Kalayu Meharim, who were arrested today, also stated that they are the other coordinators of the rally.

According to the Joint Task Force for Security and Safety, in its statement, it indicated that “97 suspects who took a mission” were arrested for planning to “introduce armed forces and groups to Addis Ababa city and create violence and riots under the guise of a parade.” He also said that in order to thwart the plot of militants in the Amhara and Oromia regions, a surprise search was conducted in various areas in Addis Ababa and the suspects who were “working in cooperation with the anti-peace forces” were arrested along with weapons and communication radios.

The task force stated that the forces operating in some areas of the Amhara and Oromia regions, which it did not mention by name, but are supported by “foreign forces” to destroy the country, will continue the campaign to arrest the rest.

The chairman of EHPA explained that the arrested four coordinators of the rally were arrested by the police from different places. They said that all four are at the Federal Police Criminal Investigation Office located in Addis Ababa, Mexico. Assistant Professor Znabu said that it was not known why the four politicians were arrested because they had not yet “promised”
