federal government and the Oromo Liberation Army Disagreement

The first round of talks between the federal government and the Oromo Liberation Army to end the years-long war in the Oromia region ended without an agreement.

Both sides stated that the talks, which have been going on for nine days since Tuesday of last week, could not reach an agreement on some issues.

The discussion that was held at the Emerald Resort and Spa, located on the coast of Muyuni in the north-east of Zanzibar, was held today, Wednesday, April 25, 2015. The federal government and the Oromo Liberation Army announced it in separate statements following its completion.

Although both parties did not state what kind of issues they could not reach an agreement on, they also announced that this discussion, which was said to be the first, was mostly constructive

The Oromo Liberation Army expressed its determination to find a political solution to the conflict. The government, on the other hand, said that according to the constitution and through the basic principles that have been followed so far, the government has a firm position to resolve the conflict peacefully. It is not yet known where and when the next talks between the government and the rebels will take place. This discussion, which consists of six delegates and mediators from the two parties, was held on Tuesday, April 17, 2015. It was planned to start in Zanzibar, an autonomous region of Tanzania, and end at the end of the week, but it was extended for more days and ended today.
