Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – A tragic incident unfolded today near Addis Ababa Stadium as one football fan was shot and killed, and another seriously injured, after Ethiopian security forces opened fire on peaceful supporters hours before the final match of the Ethiopian Premier League between Wolayta Dicha and Sidama Coffee.
The two victims were part of a larger group of supporters from Sidama and Wolayta, who had traveled to Addis Ababa to support their teams. According to multiple eyewitnesses, the fans were peacefully gathered around the stadium, singing and cheering in anticipation of the match, when shots were suddenly fired by security personnel.
One fan died at the scene. The second victim was taken to Zewditu Memorial Hospital, where he is currently receiving emergency medical treatment.
Sudden Stadium Lockdown
Earlier in the day, Ethiopian authorities unexpectedly announced that the match would be held behind closed doors, denying entry to the public without offering any official explanation. This decision was made after thousands of fans had already arrived in Addis Ababa from various regions.
Despite this, supporters remained calm and gathered outside the stadium area, waiting for kickoff time while chanting and waving their team colors.
Security Forces Blamed for Lethal Force
Eyewitnesses told Ambassador Media that there were no signs of violence, provocation, or clashes when security forces discharged live ammunition into the crowd. The incident has sparked grief among football fans and communities in the Southern regions.
The match proceeded as scheduled between Wolayta Dicha and Sidama Coffee, but in an eerily empty stadium.
No official statement has been released yet by the Addis Ababa Police, Federal Police, or Ethiopian Football Federation regarding the reason for closing the stadium or the use of deadly force.
Ambassador Media will continue to follow this story as it develops.
