The displaced people, who were displaced from various zones of the Oromia region three years ago and are now sheltering near the town of Haiq in the southern Wollo zone, said that the monthly support provided by the government has been stopped and that hunger has occurred in the shelter camp.
One of the residents of the shelter, Ms. Halima Muhe, confirmed to the foundation media, “Children and elderly people have fallen ill. There are also those who have died and are not wearing their clothes. The federal and regional governments do not consider us as citizens who were displaced from Wollega and sheltered in this camp. It has been more than four months since food and medicine were cut off. There is nothing to eat.”
“Since the camp was established for another purpose, due to the mismatch between the number of displaced people from Wollega and the capacity of the camp, most of us are sleeping under trees and bushes in the area. The tent where children, mothers and elderly people lived has also been torn down due to old age and is no longer serving us, so we are all left in the sun,” said Ato Mohamed Yimer, one of the displaced people.
Despite our efforts to contact the relevant government body regarding this, we were unable to reach them, saying, “We are in a meeting on the current security situation.”
Thousands of displaced people from Oromia region have taken refuge in Amhara region, especially in South Wollo Harbu, near Lake, Mekane Selam, Mekdela Masha, North Wollo Jara, East and West Gojjam zones, due to the security situation in various zones.
Although there were plans to return these displaced people to their homes, the displaced people expressed their concerns, saying, “Our homes and property are still in the hands of the militants, if we return, we will be attacked.”
