The International Commission of Human Rights Experts of the United Nations urged the Ethiopian government to take reasonable measures to enforce the law in relation to the state of emergency imposed in the Amhara region.
The commission said it is concerned about the worsening security situation in the north-west of the country, especially in the Amhara region, and requested that the law enforcement action of the government be proportional.
The commission recalled that the Council of Ministers declared a state of emergency to control the conflict in the Amhara region, and said that human rights violations were committed during the previous state of emergency.
Therefore, the group of experts said that according to Article 4 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the government should follow the principle of necessity, proportionality and non-aggression when implementing this state of emergency.
The United Nations Human Rights Group has called on all parties involved in this conflict to respect human rights and stop conflict and work to resolve their differences peacefully.
It will be remembered that this group of experts has been given the responsibility by the Human Rights Council of the Organization of the Nations to investigate the alleged human rights violations in the country since the beginning of the civil war in northern Ethiopia.
The commission conducted its investigation under the mandate of the United Nations Human Rights Council and released its findings earlier this year.
In the report, the commission disclosed that rape, sexual assaults, extrajudicial killings and starvation were used as weapons against civilians during the two-year bloody war in northern Ethiopia.
The commission believed that these violations constituted war crimes as well as crimes against humanity.
This report of the commission angered the Ethiopian government, and following the release of the report, the Ethiopian government protested that the conclusion did not meet professional obligations and denied the facts on the ground.
It is also reported that the Ethiopian government has repeatedly asked that the importance of the expert group should end following the end of the war.
However, after the establishment of the United Nations human rights expert group, it was decided to extend the term of office by one year until December 2016.
