Health Workers’ Strike Persists in Parts of Ethiopia Amid Ongoing Disputes

Giessen, Germany– The nationwide strike by health workers in Ethiopia has entered another day, with reports confirming continued disruptions in some hospitals across the country. Movement coordinators speaking to Deutsche Welle on Tuesday said the strike, which began earlier this month, is still active in select regions, though a number of workers have resumed part-time duties.

The strike, driven by long-standing demands for better working conditions, fair wages, and sufficient medical supplies, has placed a significant strain on public hospitals and clinics. Health professionals have expressed frustration over what they describe as government inaction and lack of clear negotiation efforts.

“In some hospitals, only emergency services are functioning. The rest of the staff are either absent or working under protest,” said a strike coordinator who requested anonymity for security reasons.

In Addis Ababa and parts of Oromia and Amhara regions, patients are facing delays in accessing critical services, and some outpatient departments have closed temporarily.

Despite the partial return of some health workers to their posts on a part-time basis, the overall impact of the strike remains significant. Coordinators warned that if no substantial steps are taken by authorities to meet their demands, the strike could intensify in the coming days.

The Ministry of Health has not issued a new statement as of Tuesday morning. Previous remarks from the government urged workers to return to duty, citing the crucial role they play in public health and national stability.

Observers warn that prolonged disruptions in the healthcare system could have severe consequences, especially in rural areas where medical infrastructure is already limited.

Ambassador Media will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as the situation unfolds.
