“A Government That Refuses to Listen: Ethiopia’s Leaders Turn Their Backs on the People”

Addis Ababa – Across the country, Ethiopians are speaking — crying out for justice, economic relief, peace, and dignity. But the government remains deaf to their voices, choosing repression over dialogue, denial over responsibility, and control over compassion.

From skyrocketing inflation and food insecurity to ethnic violence and political imprisonment, Ethiopia is in crisis. Yet those in power seem more concerned with maintaining their grip than responding to the suffering of millions. Citizens are asking for jobs, safety, and basic services. What they receive instead are empty speeches, brutal crackdowns, and silence.

“This is not a government of the people,” says a teacher in Hawassa. “They do not hear us. They do not care. We are abandoned.”

Despite claiming to represent a democratic federation, the Ethiopian government continues to operate with authoritarian instincts — shutting down independent media, jailing opposition voices, and ignoring legitimate grievances. Entire regions remain marginalized, while citizens who protest are labeled as threats to national security.

Youth unemployment is at crisis levels. Farmers are displaced. Civil servants go months without pay. Hospitals lack medicine. Schools crumble. Meanwhile, government officials enjoy security, privilege, and immunity from accountability.

“The country is bleeding, and the leaders pretend not to see it,” says a journalist in Bahir Dar who asked to remain anonymous. “They are not ignorant by accident. They choose not to listen because listening would mean acting. And acting would mean giving up power.”

Rather than addressing root problems, the government often deflects blame — pointing fingers at foreign actors, opposition parties, or “anti-peace elements.” But the Ethiopian people know the truth: the greatest threat to their well-being is a government that refuses to hear them.

Ambassador Media demands that the Ethiopian leadership open its ears and eyes to the pain of its people. No nation can move forward while its rulers walk away from their own citizens.
