The Media Council said that journalists are being arrested without due process of law

The Ethiopian Media Council has recently said that journalists are being abducted and arrested without the authority of the law and media institutions are being raided without a court order.

The council today April 9/2015. In his statement, he said that when journalists who are suspected of crimes committed through the media are arrested by the police or when they are brought to court, the media does not announce it, not only preventing professionals from doing their work freely, but also keeping the press environment under control. In its statement, the Ethiopian Media Council mentioned Proclamation No. 1238/13 that those suspected of committing a crime through the media should not be kept in prison for further investigation, without being detained for further investigation.

The Ethiopian Council of Journalists said that citizens’ rights are repeatedly being violated by the judiciary and called for the release of extra judicially imprisoned journalists.

The council said that when the government discharges its governmental responsibility, it should not violate the right to freedom of expression and the participation of citizens in the democratic system. He asked the judicial system to fulfill its constitutional duty by being guided only by the provisions of the Media Proclamation.
