The family of Ato Christian Tadele — a respected parliamentarian and public figure — has issued an urgent call for help as his health reaches a critical stage in detention.
According to relatives, prison authorities have severely restricted his access to vital nutrition, banning essential items such as honey, milk, and other liquids critical to his recovery. Delivery of prescribed medications has also been obstructed, placing his life in constant danger.
Ato Christian has faced recurring complications since undergoing major surgery, including a battle with cancer. His doctors have repeatedly stressed the need for radiation therapy abroad, warning that local facilities are insufficient to treat his worsening condition. Despite urgent and emotional pleas from his medical team, prison officials continue to block the necessary treatment.
The harsh conditions of detention — marked by poor sanitation, lack of comfort, and isolation — have further aggravated his illness. Family visits, once permitted three times a week, have now been completely suspended, leaving him cut off from essential support during this life-threatening period.
In addition to cancer, Ato Christian suffers from other serious health issues, further compounding the risks he faces. His family is appealing to the public, human rights organizations, and the international community to intervene immediately.
“We ask, in the name of the Creator, to stand with our brother who is enduring unbearable suffering,” the family pleaded.
This case is not isolated but part of a troubling pattern in Ethiopia, where political prisoners are denied adequate medical care, raising urgent concerns about human rights and human dignity.
