Oromo Envoys Abroad Hold Online Discussed on Post-Abiy Ethiopia

In a significant political development, Oromo envoys based abroad have convened an online consultation forum to discuss the prospects of a “post-Abiy government” and chart a vision for Ethiopia’s future. The digital gathering, which brought together Oromo political voices from across the diaspora, focused on the need for a national dialogue and released a joint position statement outlining their concerns and proposed pathways for peaceful political transition.

The forum, notable for including a spectrum of opposition views, emphasized the urgency of inclusive political discourse beyond the current administration led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. However, the event drew criticism for excluding representatives of the ruling Prosperity Party and those engaged in peaceful struggle within Ethiopia. Critics argued that any dialogue about the country’s future must also involve voices from within the nation to ensure legitimacy and broader representation.

This latest consultation follows a wave of digital political mobilizations targeting the Ethiopian government. Just last month, a grand online protest organized by Reyot Media drew thousands of participants, including prominent political figures such as Lidetu Ayalew and other senior opposition leaders. The protest voiced strong criticism against the Ethiopian government, raising concerns over issues ranging from human rights violations and democratic backsliding to economic mismanagement and ethnic polarization.

Both the Reyot Media-led protest and the Oromo envoys’ consultation reflect a growing discontent among Ethiopians at home and abroad. These movements are intensifying pressure on the current administration and calling for a national dialogue that includes all stakeholders, particularly as the political crisis in the country deepens.

As the momentum for change builds, the international community is watching closely. Many are urging Ethiopian political actors to embrace inclusive dialogue and avoid further instability.

Ambassador Media will continue to monitor developments and provide updates on Ethiopia’s evolving political landscape.
