Ethiopian Authorities Ban Deutsche Welle Journalists in Latest Assault on Press Freedom

Ambassador Media Editorial | October 23, 2025 | Germany

In a deeply troubling move that marks another step backward for press freedom in Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Media Authority has banned Deutsche Welle (DW) journalists from reporting across various parts of the country. The decision, communicated through an official letter issued today, alleges that DW and its correspondents violated national laws and professional ethics—a charge the international broadcaster has consistently denied.

Deutsche Welle, one of the world’s most respected international media institutions, has been a vital source of independent, balanced, and factual reporting on Ethiopia’s political, economic, and social developments since the 1980s. Through its correspondents based in Mekelle, Bahir Dar, Dessie, Addis Ababa, Hawassa, Dire Dawa, and Assosa, DW has provided millions of Ethiopians with access to credible information that transcends propaganda and censorship.

The Ethiopian government’s decision to suspend DW reporters’ work permits—without specifying the duration of the so-called “temporary” suspension—raises serious concerns about the country’s deteriorating commitment to freedom of expression and journalistic independence.

This is not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern of intimidation, media restrictions, and harassment of independent journalists who seek to tell the truth. Ethiopia’s authorities have repeatedly shown hostility toward critical reporting, silencing voices that challenge government narratives and shrinking the already narrow space for public discourse.

By targeting Deutsche Welle—a globally respected platform known for its professionalism and adherence to international journalistic standards—the Ethiopian government is sending a clear message: dissenting voices and independent media are not welcome.

Ambassador Media Stands with Deutsche Welle

At Ambassador Media, we condemn this unjustified and repressive action in the strongest possible terms. The suspension of DW’s correspondents is not merely an attack on one media organization; it is an assault on the fundamental right of Ethiopians to access truthful, independent information.

We stand in full solidarity with Deutsche Welle and its journalists, who have long served as a beacon of responsible reporting amid an increasingly hostile environment for media in Ethiopia.

Freedom of the press is not a privilege—it is a cornerstone of democracy. Silencing journalists does not protect a nation’s image; it only deepens mistrust and widens the gap between the government and its people.

We call on the Ethiopian authorities to immediately reinstate DW’s reporters, respect international norms of media freedom, and cease their ongoing campaign against independent journalism.

Until that happens, Ambassador Media will continue to stand with Deutsche Welle and all journalists who risk their safety to report the truth.
