“Chife of Commander Berhanu Jula’s Alarming Statement Exposes a Dangerous Government Agenda”

By Muluken Tekleyohanes | Ambassador Media | Commentary & Editorial | July 24, 2025 | Germany

In a disturbing and revealing statement made during a military graduation ceremony this week, Field Marshal Berhanu Jula, Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian Defense Forces, openly addressed the question of regional secession with shocking nonchalance. “You must hand over the tanks and artillery you have hidden. There is no region in Ethiopia that is armed with tanks and artillery. Tigray is part of the federation. Tigray can be armed with tanks and artillery only if it is a separate state. It does not require force to secede. There is a procedure… there is a constitution, go there.”

These words are not simply concerning—they are a chilling indicator of the deep fracture within the state apparatus and a regime that no longer operates in the interest of national unity. For the highest-ranking military official, tasked with defending Ethiopia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, to publicly suggest that a region can “go and secede peacefully,” signals not only a betrayal of duty, but a normalization of national disintegration.

When Treason Wears the Uniform of Authority

This is no isolated slip of the tongue. Rather, it reflects a dangerous trend among those in power—one of appeasement, surrender, and ultimately, calculated destruction. How can a country remain intact when the guardians of its sovereignty begin to promote legal pathways for disintegration?

Make no mistake: if such a statement were made in any nation with functioning democratic institutions, Berhanu Jula would not remain in office for 24 hours. In any stable country, a military leader who entertains the idea of peaceful secession—while his government simultaneously engages in repression, warfare, and authoritarian control—would be swiftly held accountable. But Ethiopia is no longer that kind of country.

The Power-Hungry Architects of Collapse

This is the same administration whose officials once asked defiantly: “If we want to destroy the country, who will stop us?”—a chilling admission of intent. And indeed, they have worked tirelessly toward that goal. Under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopia has descended into political turmoil, economic catastrophe, ethnic division, and civil war. And now, under the guise of constitutionalism, they flirt with the idea of handing over regions to fragmentation—as long as it preserves their grip on the center.

This is not governance; it is a strategy of chaos and control. Any force that threatens the ruling group—be it political opposition, dissenting regions, or public outcry—is either crushed or encouraged to self-destruct. Berhanu’s message was not one of national unity or strength. It was a veiled threat: Stay in line, or walk away. We’ll hold the door open while we burn what’s left behind.

A Wake-Up Call for a Sleeping Nation

Ethiopia does not deserve this. Ethiopians do not deserve this. We are a proud nation with a history of resilience, diversity, and statehood. Yet we are now being led by individuals who seem to care more about maintaining power than preserving the nation.

To allow such leadership to remain in power is to allow Ethiopia’s continued collapse. It is time to say what too many are afraid to say: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his administration must resign immediately. Not after another election. Not after another peace conference. Now. Before there is no country left to govern.

Conclusion: Step Down Before It’s Too Late

The statements of Field Marshal Berhanu Jula are not only irresponsible—they are treasonous in spirit. They represent a government that has abandoned its people and its purpose. The writing is on the wall. Ethiopia is bleeding, and those in power are tightening the tourniquet around its neck instead of healing its wounds.

Ambassador Media calls on the Ethiopian people, civil society, and the international community to demand accountability, demand answers, and above all, demand resignation. Ethiopia’s future is too precious to leave in the hands of those who dare us to stop them from destroying it.
